The Knight ADRC Research Education Component (REC) is developing a comprehensive mentor training and support program for junior and senior faculty in Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD) research.  This program will provide a six session mentoring workshop series, with each session focusing on education and resources in different aspects of the mentoring process.

In this inaugural workshop course, attendees will receive the skills and framework needed to assist mentees in creating an Individual Development Plan that is based on the individual’s long-term vision and that aligns with the institutional environment.  The course will be led by Dr. Nimish Mohile, a Professor in the Department of Neurology and Associate Chair for Development and Leadership at the University of Rochester.  Dr. Mohile will provide attendees not only learning skills, but the opportunity to work in a structured format to identify and prioritize values, set vision and goals, and create an action plan.    

Mentoring Workshop Details

This workshop is intended for mentors in academic medicine.  Mentors should ideally have mentees that are interested in a career in academic medicine focused on research, educational research or scholarship, clinical program development or administrative leadership in ADRD. 

Time commitment:
Attendees will participate in six (6) zoom sessions over the course of six (6) months starting in May of 2021 and continuing through October 2021.  Each session will last 60 minutes, and there will be brief homework assignments and additional work related to developing Individual Development Plans. (*75% Participation commitment is required, 5 of 6 classes must be attended)

Program Details

The Washington University School of Medicine Charles F. and Joanne Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center Research Education Component was started in May 2020.  The long-term goal of the REC is to develop and support a diverse group of independent ADRD researchers by helping trainees to develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as an independent ADRD investigator.

By developing a dynamic training pipeline, the Knight ADRC REC hopes to meet the nation’s need for a diverse clinical translational workforce in Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD). The REC will assist trainees with career development along the entire training continuum by leveraging national collaborative relationships as well as the rich research and training resources available at Washington University, and will provide resources and mentoring to all levels of trainees.


REC Scholar Program & Application Details

This program will include: 


  • Training in core ADRD and research competencies
  • Training in basic, clinical and translational research concepts necessary for furthering innovative research on AD
  • Mentorship to advance research independence


This program does not provide salary support. Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have protected time to carry out their project and engage in training.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants Must:


  • Be able to commit 50% effort to training with funding from an additional sources, such as a T32 or KL2, or an independent career development award
  • Be US citizens, non-citizen nationals or have permanent residence

Applicants Should:


  • Be appointed at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level (Post-Doctoral candidates who are approaching the start of their independent career in Alzheimer disease and related disorders will also be considered)
  • Have research aims that can be connected to or benefit AD research and align with the National Alzheimer’s Project Act
  • Have published works, contributions to science, positions and honors


In Addition:


  • Applicants who have an NIH career award or similar are preferred, but this is not required.
  • Applicants may have an NIH R01 grant (or similar) application under review at the time of their application. However, applicants who hold an R01 or similar award are not eligible.

Scholar Expectations & Program Benefits

The REC Scholar Program will support the development of research skills and a deeper understanding of AD and related dementias. Scholars will gain knowledge in AD research through interaction with other scholars and faculty in the Knight ADRC and with resources available from the larger Washington University community to carry out their own research projects.

  • Mini-Residencies within the Cores of the Knight ADRC
  • Monthly Career Development Seminar and Annual Career Development Retreat
  • Assistance in applying for funding through a variety of sources
  • Monetary support for seminar travel, didactic coursework and eligible activities identified on IDP (such as externships, minor equipment expenses, etc.)


The participation in a variety of seminar series and workshops will integrate trainees with other AD researchers from across campus and throughout the country. We expect the benefits to the trainees will last well past completion of the program and that REC Scholars will become peer mentors and collaborate in future studies.

Selection Process

Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Overall potential for a career in ADRD research
  • Potential for REC support to have a positive impact on the trainee’s career trajectory
  • Availability of resources, issues related to diversity and inclusion of both research disciplines in ADRD research and of trainees (women, URM, and those with disabilities), and diversity of the applicant’s proposed research area
  • REC support would typically be for two years, but trainees will be reviewed and reappointed annually
